Lanterns of the 1800’s

I came across an old lantern fixture in the 4th ward I had not seen anywhere else. This old lantern fixture was a fixture that time and Duke Energy had forgot. It had an old Duke Energy sticker on it and it was hidden on a walkway in between 8th Street and North Graham street under a tree. It had an old circular globe on it encased in a old rectangle glass box. When I contacted the Duke Coordinator with a picture he immediately said we don’t have fixtures like that. I agreed, but when I sent a better picture with a Duke energy sticker on it, he said he would investigate. Three times I entered tickets and 3 times they got closed as not a Duke fixture.

Finally, after much investigation we found this was an old legacy fixture that was used in the 1800’s, I mean 1980’s. Duke Energy had replaced all of these fixtures in the area with 6 sided High Pressure Sodium (HPS) amber looking fixtures and somehow forgot this one. Fast forward the clock, and we finally got it replaced with a bright and shiny LED fixture to light up that old dark walkway.

Stay tuned to see what other treasures we will find.
